Strip the vinyl crackle and the rain sounds off any good lo-fi beat and you will find jazz harmony underneath, played slow. That is the entire secret. Here is the theory, with note spellings, so the chill stops being an accident.
Rule one: no plain triads
The fastest way to sound lo-fi is to add a 7th to every chord you were about to play. C major becomes Cmaj7 (C, E, G, B). D minor becomes Dm7 (D, F, A, C). That single extension is the difference between a nursery rhyme and a Nujabes record.
The ii-V-I, the genre's skeleton
In C major: Dm7, G7, Cmaj7. This is the most common progression in jazz, and lo-fi borrowed it wholesale. Play it at 75 BPM with a soft Rhodes and you are eighty percent of the way there. Want it dreamier? Make the I a maj9: C, E, G, B, D.
Four progressions that always work
- ii9, V13, Imaj9, vi7: Dm9, G13, Cmaj9, Am7. The full jazz turnaround, endlessly loopable.
- Imaj7, IVmaj7: Cmaj7, Fmaj7. Two chords, infinite calm. Move the melody, not the harmony.
- i7, bVIImaj7, bVImaj7: Am7, Gmaj7, Fmaj7. The melancholy walk-down, great under a mellow guitar.
- Imaj7, bIIImaj7: Cmaj7 to Ebmaj7. A borrowed chord from C minor that adds that bittersweet "something happened" color.
Voicings matter more than chords
Real players do not stack thirds from the root. Spread the chord: put the root and 7th in the left hand, the 3rd, 5th, and 9th in the right. Drop the middle note of a close voicing down an octave (a drop-2 voicing) and everything instantly sounds more like a record. And let notes overlap slightly between chord changes: lo-fi hates clean transitions.
The imperfection layer
- Pull a few notes 10 to 20 ticks off the grid, especially in the right hand.
- Randomize velocity between roughly 60 and 95. Uniform velocity is the tell of a programmed beat.
- Detune the instrument a few cents, or use a tape wobble plugin, so held chords drift.
