Neo-soul harmony is what happens when gospel players get studio time: nothing is a plain triad, every chord change has a chord between it, and the voicings are spread like a keyboardist's hands, not stacked like a MIDI default. Here is how to build that sound deliberately.
Extensions are the entry fee
The genre's baseline chord is the 9th. Em9 (E, G, B, D, F#), Amaj9 (A, C#, E, G#, B), Dm11 (D, F, A, C, G). If a chord in your progression has three notes, it is not finished. The 9th adds warmth, the 11th adds suspension, the 13th adds glow.
Three progressions to start from
- im9, IVm9: Em9 to Am9. The two-chord soul vamp. D'Angelo built careers on less.
- Imaj9, iii7, vi9, II13: Cmaj9, Em7, Am9, D13. That D13 is a secondary dominant, the "borrowed light" chord that makes the loop feel like it breathes.
- ivm9, bVIImaj13, Imaj9: Fm9, Bbmaj13, Cmaj9. The backdoor resolution, straight out of the gospel playbook.
The passing chord habit
Gospel and neo-soul players rarely move directly between two chords. Approaching Am9? Hit Bbdim7 for a 16th note on the way. Moving from C to F? Slide through C#dim7. These chromatic passing chords are quick, quiet, and they are most of what people mean when they say a progression sounds "expensive". A simple recipe: approach any target chord from a half step above or below with a diminished 7th.
Voice like hands, not like stacks
Drop-2 voicings are the standard: take a close-position chord and drop its second-highest note down an octave. Cmaj9 stops being a cluster and becomes a spread of piano-realistic intervals. Keep the root and 7th low, color notes high, and never move all voices in parallel: hold common tones between chords and move the rest by step. That is voice leading, and it is audible even through a lo-fi filter.
Rhythm: lazy on purpose
Neo-soul chords land slightly behind the beat. Drag the whole chord track 15 to 25 ticks late against a quantized drum groove and the track immediately relaxes. Keep velocities uneven: thumb notes louder, inner notes softer.
